Handlebar Hill open cut mine is a lead zinc mine at Mount Isa, Queensland, with production of 1.75 million tonnes per year.
A series of dust trials were conducted for a 2 month period on a haul road 12 kilometres long and 18 metres wide. This haul road is highly susceptible to dust pollution and road surface stabilisation problems.
At the beginning of the trials, 30 full water carts were required each day to control haul road dust according to regulated limits. An average of 15 loads per 12 hour shift. At the completion of the trials, an average of 9 water cart loads were demanded each 12 hour shift, with each load being dosed with our product at a concentration of 1:200.
The site’s civil engineer reported significant improvement in haul road surface strength and integrity from day 15 to day 60 of the trial. He extrapolated a resulting 22% reduction in road surface repair costs in terms of time and materials, if the trial was extended to 12 months. Furthermore, during this time, an assessment of the potential reduced vehicle maintenance was conducted. It was estimated that vehicle maintenance could decrease up to 15%.
